International Air Freight Terminal Opens At PIIA

May 2014

The new International Air Freight Terminal has finally opened at PIIA. All commercial cargo flights have now been transferred from North Gates Bill Flaunsveig Airport to PIIA's new cargo facility. With a maximum handling capacity of 270,000 tonnes, the International Air Freight Terminal is expected to increase air cargo revenue by 12% per annum.

Older facilities at North Gates Bill Flaunsveig Airport will be converted for full military usage, for use by Jeddelta Aeronautics, Imperial Royal Union's leading aerospace defense company. The Royal Air Arms of Imperial Royal Union will also be using the old airport as an airbase. Currently, a bid has been released for aerospace companies out there to lease the remaining space at the old airport.

Construction of Eleventh Runway Begins

March 2014

Minister for Transportation, Lord Verine Helsingkerg, the Comte d'Arlonde, officially announced the construction of the eleventh runway at PIIA at today's groundbreaking ceremony.

After 3 months of decision making, the Department of Aviation Safety and Security (DASS) and the National Airports Authority (NAA) with the help of the Ministry of Transportation have approved the construction of the eleventh runway at PIIA. At an estimated cost 8.4 million Royale Elites, the eleventh runway will be by far the longest runway at a length of 20,000 ft or 6,100 m.

The eleventh runway, Runway 01/36, will serve as PIIA's main emergency runway for all aircraft, and still allow other runways to operate should an emergency happen. Runway 01/36 will also serve commercial flights, but due to the planned location that puts the runway further away from the airport as compared to other runways, the runway might take at least 10 minutes to reach from Terminal 1, situated right in the middle of the airport. An aircraft at Terminal 9, situated furthest away from the new runway, might take 20-30 minutes to reach the runway.

Air Traffic Control Unveils New Ground Radar

November 2013

ATC at PIIA unveiled a new system of ground radar, designed by Ordensky Avionics, replacing the near 10-year-old ground radar system used at the airport.

The new system, Ordensky G2.5 Radar, will help controllers better manage ground traffic more efficiently, providing controllers with data about aircraft such as the intended routes, suggested routes and high density taxiways, helping controllers manage the situation on the ground with ease.

At the same time, the new system will also pick up any Foreign Object Debris (FOD) and will warn controllers of possible hazards on the taxiways and runways.
