Runway Information
Runways are definitely part of the core infrastructure required at every single airport. At PIIA, we have 10 runways, all sufficiently equipped and definitely safer than international standards.
According to safety standards set forward by the Department of Aviation Safety and Security, all airports serving commercial flights that carry more than 200 passngers each must have runways no shorter than 4,000 m, which is way above international standards. Not only are we safer than national requirements, the ends of our runways are all fitted with Engineered Material Arresting Systems (EMAS), which will definitely prevent an overrun should an aircraft fail to slow down in time on our very long runways.
However, that does not mean that aircraft must travel down the entire length of the runway. With more than enough taxiways, aircraft can simply exit the runway after touchdown or take-off with more than half the runway remaining.
All runways are equipped with CAT III Instrument Landing Systems and are maintained regularly. The control tower is also equipped with ground radar to keep track of aircraft on the runways and taxiways.
